Phishing
Missed Delivery (Smishing) Scams
You receive a text message claiming to be from a delivery service like USPS, FedEx, or UPS, stating there is an issue with a package delivery.
How It Works
- You receive an SMS (smishing) message saying a package is being held due to an incomplete address or unpaid customs fees.
- The message includes a link to a website to "reschedule delivery" or "pay the fee."
- The link leads to a phishing site designed to steal your personal information and credit card details.
- Alternatively, the site may prompt you to download malware disguised as a tracking app.
Red Flags
- The message is unexpected, especially if you aren't waiting for a package.
- The link in the text message is a strange, non-official URL.
- The message asks for a small payment (e.g., $1.99) for redelivery, a tactic to get your credit card information.
- The message contains spelling or grammatical errors.
Prevention Tips
- Do not click links in unsolicited text messages.
- If you are expecting a package, track it using the official tracking number on the courier's official website.
- Never enter personal or financial information on a website you accessed from a text message link.
- You can report smishing attempts by forwarding the message to 7726 (SPAM).
Example Scenario
"Text message: "USPS: Your package with tracking number UZ7345B is pending. Please confirm your address and pay the $2.99 redelivery fee here: [suspicious link].""
